Low-Drop, Low-Cost High Power Constant Current Source for d.c. voltages up to 40 volts of a extreme compact design. Several High Power LEDs of the same type (respectively with identical current consumption) can be connected in series. An additional series resistor isn`t required. The circuit supplies the High Power LEDs with constant current and reliable protects the LEDs for voltage spikes.
Please note that the LKO is a linear regulator, i.e. the voltage difference is transformed in heat. For this reason some combinations aren`t reasonable or possible. The sum of the voltages of all connected LEDs have to be at least 0.8 volts below the supply voltage. When the maximum allowed power dissipation of the technical datas is exceeded, the LKO will overheat and shutdown. The maximum power dissipation is calculated by the output voltage (sum of voltages of all connected LEDs) and the power according to the following formula:
Power Dissipation = (Supply Voltage - Output Voltage) * Power
Example: 6 white 1 Watt HighPower LEDs with 700mA power (0,7A) and 3,7 volts forward voltage of 24 volts
Power Dissipation = ( 24 volts - 22,2 volts) * 0,7A = 1,8 volts * 0,7A = 1,26 VA (watts)

The following table shows you a general view of the operating range. The number of the LEDs relates of the white LEDs with a forward voltage of 3.8 V. The table shows you the power dissipation of the particular supply voltage and the number of LEDs.
